Rytis Sabaliauskas - Artist

We are really happy to present an artist who recently joined our team, Rytis Sabaliauskas. Let’s learn more about him…

-Could you present yourself in a few sentences? Since when did you come up with the idea to work in an artistic field?

I am from Kaunas, Lithuania. When I was young, I didn’t know what to do in the future. Because I used to spend most of my free time playing video games, I thought I should look for a job in that area. Programming came to my mind first. I quickly understood that it wasn’t going to be my thing, so I consider the artistic part of games. I started drawing in my free time but that wasn’t enough, so I also attended evening art school for one year. There I learned the basic in drawing, painting, sculpting, and designing. After graduating from high school, I applied to vocational school where I studied computer graphics for two years.

-When did you start digital art?

My aim was digital from the beginning, but as it is hard to find a digital art school, I studied traditional arts first. It was a good way to learn universal knowledge. I finally turned to digital when I felt that I have necessary skills to do so. Just after I started, a fellow digital artist brought to my mind that I could try learning 3D modeling to push my paintings further. Only after that I started implementing my 2D structures with 3D.

-We can see wonderful environments in your portfolio, where do you find the inspiration to create places like that?

Lithuanian nature influenced me since childhood, but thanks to various Erasmus programs and other opportunities, I had the chance to travel to Belgium, Malta, Czech Republic, Belarus, and England. I saw many different landscapes that influenced my imagination. I also had a time when I played strategy games and watched a lot of movies and TV shows like Vikings or Lord of the Rings, which built a curiosity around fantasy. I started my art from there. Generally, if I see photographs with attracting colors, I want to start painting them straight away. If an idea, or a subject catches my attention, I will look for references until I am able to make my own version of it.

-Are there any technic, medium, subject matters, or styles you wish to experiment in the future?

I started with environments, so I guess my next step would be to learn to make characters. There would be a lot to study before being able to create believable ones. It is a huge challenge because viewers easily notice mistakes in the proportions of a character. Having this skill would allow me to build more complex compositions and make my paintings more heart touching.

-What do you expect from working at Goodname Studio?

Coming to work with your team, I really wish to improve my skills in general, like speed, efficiency. I hope it will be the perfect occasion to start learning character art. I want to share my ideas with everyone and learn from other great artists working here. I enjoy the variety of projects I am about to work on!
